FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Cisco port-channel and link aggregation questions for operators in the Netherlands.

Against the European card on our published shipping page, which names the Netherlands at 3 to 5 days door-to-door from Cairo. The timing comes from the published band rather than from a per-order estimate.
Check bundle membership before the cable. Every member of a port-channel must agree on speed, duplex, and the switching parameters configured on it. A member that disagrees is not an error condition; it is simply excluded from the bundle and left as an independent port, so the bundle forms with fewer links than you installed.
The bundle reports itself as up, because it is. It has formed successfully with the members that agreed. Nothing is down, nothing is errored, and the capacity is simply lower than intended. You have to ask how many members are active rather than whether the channel is up.
After hardware replacement. A card or a switch is swapped, configuration is restored, and one port ends up with a setting that differs slightly from its peers. The bundle re-forms without it and the network carries on at reduced capacity for however long it takes someone to compare intended and actual member counts.
Record the intended member count and compare it after any change, rather than trusting that the channel being up means it is whole. We supply line cards, switching platforms, UCS hardware, matched optics and correctly rated supplies on the 3 to 5 day European lane. Each module is run under load, recorded to its serial, and backed one to three years.

A Bundle Forms With Whoever Agrees

Link aggregation combines several physical ports into one logical link, and every member has to agree on a set of parameters: speed, duplex, and the switching configuration applied to the port. A port that disagrees is not treated as a fault. It is excluded, and the bundle forms successfully with the members that do agree. The result is a working channel carrying less capacity than was installed.

Everything Reports Healthy, Because Everything Is

The channel is up. The excluded port is up. No interface is errored, no protocol is complaining, and no alarm has any reason to fire. The only symptom is throughput lower than the design, which is a performance observation rather than a fault, and it will be investigated as an application or a capacity issue long before anyone asks how many members the bundle actually has.

Hardware replacement is when it appears

A line card or a switch is replaced and the configuration restored. One port acquires a setting fractionally different from its peers — a speed left on automatic, a parameter applied to the wrong range, a template that covered three ports instead of four. The bundle re-forms without that member, the network works, and the capacity loss persists until somebody compares intended members against active ones.

The check is one number

Record the intended member count for every bundle, and compare it after any change to the hardware or the configuration. Asking whether the channel is up answers the wrong question; asking how many members are in it answers the right one, and it takes a single command.

What ICD Supplies for Cisco Estates in the Netherlands

Line cards whose ports must match each other to bundle successfully, distribution and access switching, UCS compute and interconnect parts, optics selected for the port standard and the fibre plant already installed, and supplies rated against the chassis as populated. We will ask what the intended member count is before quoting a replacement card. The Netherlands is named on the published European card, giving a 3 to 5 day door-to-door lane from Cairo. Each module is run under load, recorded to its serial, and backed one to three years.
