ICD Data Shield — Certified Data Destruction | NIST 800-88, NAID, R2v3
ICD Data Shield — Certified Data Destruction That Beats OEM KYHD
When your servers, storage arrays, and laptops reach end of service life, the data on those drives becomes a liability. Dell’s Keep Your Hard Drive (KYHD) charges thousands per system for the right to retain failed drives — without actually destroying them. HPE, Lenovo, and Cisco offer similar upsells. ICD Data Shield is the alternative: a certified, three-tier data destruction service engineered around NIST 800-88, NAID AAA, and R2v3 standards, delivered on-site in Egypt and across MENA.
Data Shield is the destruction arm of ICD Care+ TPM and ICD ITAD. Whether you are retiring a single server or decommissioning an entire data hall, we handle chain of custody from pickup through certificate of destruction, with video evidence on Level 3.
Three destruction levels — priced and documented
| Level | Method | Compliance | Certificate | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 — Wipe | NIST 800-88 Purge via Blancco Drive Eraser | NIST 800-88, GDPR, HIPAA | Blancco digital certificate per drive | Reusable drives — resale or redeployment |
| Level 2 — Wipe + Degauss | L1 wipe + Garner HD-3WXL degauss | NSA/CSS EPL, NIST 800-88 | Wipe + degauss certificate | Magnetic media with residual confidentiality risk |
| Level 3 — Full Destruction + Video | L1 + L2 + Garner PD-5 physical destruction, video-witnessed | NIST 800-88 Destroy, NAID AAA, R2v3 | Certificate + video evidence + chain of custody log | Banks, telecom, government, classified workloads |
Why ICD Data Shield beats OEM “Keep Your Drive” offers
Dell ProSupport KYHD typically charges $200–$400 per server per year — and when the drive fails, you still own a drive full of sensitive data sitting in your stockroom. ICD Data Shield takes the drive, wipes it, degausses or shreds it, and hands you a compliance-grade certificate. Your drive does not re-enter the supply chain. Your data does not leak.
In MENA, Data Shield is the only Egypt-based service that combines all three destruction tiers with proper chain-of-custody documentation. The nearest comparable R2 facility is Enviroserve in Dubai — which adds shipping cost, transit risk, and export compliance overhead for every destruction event.
Bundled with TPM and ITAD
Data Shield is included at Level 1 with every ICD Care+ TPM contract at no extra cost. Level 2 is included in Gold and Platinum tiers. Level 3 is a fixed add-on for regulated customers. For customers decommissioning fleets, Data Shield is bundled inside the ICD ITAD engagement: pickup, wipe, destruction, certificate, and value recovery on reusable hardware — all in one engagement.
Compliance and certifications
- NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1 — Guidelines for Media Sanitization (Clear, Purge, Destroy)
- NAID AAA — National Association for Information Destruction accreditation pathway (in progress)
- R2v3 — Responsible Recycling standard for electronics (in progress)
- ISO/IEC 27001 — Information security management system (in progress)
- Egypt Law 151/2020 — Personal Data Protection Law registered data processor
- WMRA e-waste license — Egypt hazardous waste handling authorization
- GDPR Article 17 — Right to erasure compliance documentation
- HIPAA §164.310(d) — Device and media controls for healthcare data
Process — what happens after you sign the engagement letter
- Inventory and pickup — We catalog every drive by serial, model, capacity, and source system. Pickup is performed by vetted personnel in logo-free vehicles. GPS-tracked transport to ICD facility.
- Receipt and chain of custody — Drives are logged into a sealed secure-room queue. Chain-of-custody log records every handoff with timestamps and signatures.
- Destruction — Executed at your chosen level. Level 3 events are video-recorded with drive serial visible and a witness signature.
- Certificate of destruction — Issued within 5 business days, includes certificate number, date, method, drive serial numbers, witness name, technician name, ICD signature, and compliance standard.
- Secondary disposition — Non-reusable material routed to WMRA-licensed e-waste stream. Reusable shells monetized with proceeds returned to customer (ITAD tier).
Who uses Data Shield
Banks bound by CBE Framework for data protection. Telecom operators under Law 175/2018 data-retention rules. Government ministries managing classified workloads. Healthcare providers subject to HIPAA equivalents. Multinational enterprises enforcing group-wide data destruction policies in their Egypt operations. SaaS and fintech companies managing EU customer data under GDPR.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Blancco wipe really enough?
For operational reuse — yes. NIST 800-88 Purge via Blancco is cryptographically erase-equivalent on SSDs and overwrite-equivalent on HDDs. For the highest-assurance scenarios (top-secret, banking core), Level 2 or Level 3 is the recommended path.
Can you destroy drives on-site at our data center?
Yes. We offer on-site Level 1 wipe and Level 2 degauss for customers who cannot release media off-premises. Level 3 physical destruction is typically performed at our Cairo facility to control video quality and material stream routing, but mobile shredding can be arranged for large decommissioning events.
What is the turnaround time for a certificate?
Level 1 certificates are issued within 2 business days of destruction. Level 2 and Level 3 certificates within 5 business days. Rush certificates (24-hour) are available for time-critical compliance events.
Does Data Shield destroy SSDs correctly?
Yes. SSDs require different sanitization than HDDs — overwrite alone is insufficient due to wear leveling. Blancco SSD Erasure executes ATA Secure Erase or NVMe Format with crypto-erase where firmware supports it, and we verify with sector-level scan. Level 3 follows with physical shred to render the flash unreadable by any means.
How does this compare to Dell KYHD pricing?
Dell ProSupport KYHD adds roughly $200–$400 per server per year — and you still keep the drive. ICD Data Shield Level 1 is bundled free in TPM. Level 2 is bundled in Gold/Platinum. Level 3 adds a fixed per-drive fee. For a 50-server fleet, Data Shield typically saves $7,500–$15,000 annually versus KYHD while providing actual destruction certificates.
Can you handle a whole-site decommissioning?
Yes. ICD ITAD combined with Data Shield has executed single engagements covering 500+ drives across multi-rack deployments. We scale resources to the event.
What if we need on-site witnessing by our internal auditor?
Supported. Level 3 events routinely accommodate customer witness presence plus video record. We coordinate scheduling and provide visitor protocols at our Cairo facility.
