Coded Optics: the Cisco Problem That Stops Nigerian Links Coming Up
Cisco transceivers carry vendor coding in their EEPROM, and Cisco switches and UCS fabric check it. A Nigerian operator who buys a technically identical 10G or 40G optic from a generic supplier frequently finds the port refuses to come up, or comes up and logs an unsupported-transceiver warning that a service provider will point at during any fault. The optic is fine. The coding is not.
Why this matters more here
Optics are consumables in a market with dust, heat and frequent power events, and they are ordered in volume. When a five to seven day shipment arrives and the optics will not link, the failure is not just cost — it is a maintenance window burned, and in Nigeria those are scarce. We supply correctly coded optics for the platform they are going into, stated explicitly on the quote.
Lead time and stocking
Delivery to Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt runs five to seven days per our published shipping times, with customs clearance adding one to three. For UCS domains we recommend holding a fabric interconnect spare and a small set of coded optics locally, because those two items cause the failures that cannot wait for a shipment.
Power conditions and UCS
As with every platform in Nigerian rooms, PSUs and fans fail earlier than the design assumption under generator and inverter supply. Redundant PSUs matched to the exact chassis are worth stocking before drives are.
