Key: DDR4 and DDR5 are NOT interchangeable. DDR5 offers ~2x bandwidth and better power efficiency but requires a DDR5-compatible server platform.

ECC vs Non-ECC

ECC (required for servers): Detects and corrects single-bit errors. Prevents silent data corruption. All Dell, HPE, and Lenovo enterprise servers REQUIRE ECC memory.

Non-ECC (desktop only): No error correction. Cheaper but unacceptable for server use. Will not boot in most enterprise servers.

RDIMM vs LRDIMM vs UDIMM

RDIMM: Standard enterprise memory with a register chip. 8GB to 64GB. Used in 90%+ of server deployments.

LRDIMM: Load-reduced for maximum capacity (64-128GB per DIMM). Costs more, enables 1.5-3TB per server. Use for memory-intensive workloads.

UDIMM: Unbuffered, entry-level only. Limited to single-socket servers with fewer DIMM slots.

Understanding Memory Specifications

PC4-21300 = DDR4-2666: The PC4 rating is the bandwidth in MB/s. PC4-21300 means 21,300 MB/s peak, which corresponds to DDR4-2666 MHz.

2Rx4 vs 2Rx8: Rank x chip count. 2Rx4 = dual rank with 4Gbit chips (standard for 16-32GB). 2Rx8 = dual rank with 8Gbit chips (common for 16GB economy).

CAS Latency (CL): Lower is better but matters less in servers than desktops. Enterprise DIMMs are CL17-22 depending on speed.

Memory by Server Generation

DDR3 servers: Dell R620/R720, IBM x3650 M4, HPE DL380 Gen8. Becoming scarce – stock up on EOL parts now.

DDR4 servers: Dell R740, HPE DL380 Gen10, Lenovo SR650. Most widely deployed generation.

What does ECC mean in server memory?

Can I use DDR5 in a DDR4 server?

No. DDR5 and DDR4 have different pin layouts and voltage requirements. They are physically and electrically incompatible. You must use the exact DDR generation your server supports.

What is the difference between 1Rx8 and 2Rx4?

These describe the rank and chip organization. 1Rx8 = single rank, 8 chips (lower capacity). 2Rx4 = dual rank, 4 chips per rank (higher capacity). 2Rx4 is the most common configuration for 16GB and 32GB enterprise DIMMs.

How much memory do I need for VMware ESXi?
