Memory channel configuration affects bandwidth. Populating all channels maximizes performance. Here is how to get it right.
Channel Configuration Impact
- 1 DIMM per channel — Full speed (e.g., DDR4-2666 runs at 2666)
- 2 DIMMs per channel — Slight speed reduction on some platforms
- 3 DIMMs per channel — Maximum capacity but may reduce to 2400MHz
Rule: Populate evenly across all channels for maximum bandwidth. 1 DIMM per channel > unbalanced configuration.
