UCS C220 M5 to PowerEdge R650 Migration Guide: Cross-Brand Enterprise Move

Moving from UCS C220 M5 (Cisco M5) to PowerEdge R650 (Dell 15G) is a decision most infrastructure teams make once every 5-7 years. Get it wrong and you inherit a platform your staff cannot service. Get it right and you cut hardware spend 40-60% while keeping the workload humming.

Why this cross-brand move happens

UCS C220 M5 (1U Cisco) end-of-sale 2021-11-30, EOSL 2026-11-30. The same UCS-exit logic as C240 M5 applies but intensified — 1U deployments are often edge or DR sites where SmartNet field response SLAs are weakest. Moving to standalone R650 simplifies ops, cuts SmartNet expense, and improves refurb parts availability.

Data migration: VMware, Hyper-V, bare-metal

vMotion with EVC set to Skylake baseline or lower (C220 M5 is Xeon Scalable Gen1). Hyper-V Live Migration works. For fabric-attached UCS, the network re-cable is a significant part of the cutover work.

BIOS and firmware re-certification

CIMC + UCS service profiles to iDRAC 9 — biggest conceptual shift. UCS service profile portability is lost. Document every service profile thoroughly before decomm.

SKU reality: what swaps, what does not

Cisco memory, drives, PSUs — zero reuse. VICs are Cisco-only. Cisco SFP transceivers may refuse in Intel/Broadcom adapters on Dell side.

Support contract transition

SmartNet closes. ProSupport Plus 3-year on R650: $1,500-$2,000. Typical annual savings 25-35% on support line.

Retraining: the hidden cost

UCS Manager to iDRAC + OME. Real retraining. 8-16 hours per operator.

Budget reality (USD)

Refurb R650 $3,200-$4,800 + ProSupport Plus $1,500-$2,000 + migration $1,200-$2,000 + UCS decomm $400-$700 + retraining $400-$600 = $6,700-$10,100 per server.

ICD’s position: same team, both brands

UCS-to-Dell migrations are a delivered capability at ICD with 40+ projects since 2022. We pre-stage the network cutover plan, handle SFP transceiver compatibility issues, and maintain SLA on both sides during transition.

Migration steps

  1. Document UCS environment — Service profiles, VIC configs, VLAN/fabric trunks, boot policies.
  2. Design standalone networking — NIC teaming, VLAN config for R650 targets.
  3. Size R650 targets — 1:1 typical, 1.5:1 consolidation possible.
  4. Procure R650 refurb — ICD quote + 5-10 day delivery.
  5. Stage Dell hosts — Rack, cable, firmware, iDRAC config, hypervisor install. Network test.
  6. Migrate workloads — vMotion in waves.
  7. Unwind UCS — Remove C220 M5 from UCS domain.
  8. Buy-back C220 M5 — ICD typically $200-$450 per unit.
  9. 30-day validation — R650 fleet burn-in.

ICD inventory on both sides

UCS C220 M5 legacy spares: 32 Cisco memory SKUs; 82 SSD SKUs; 24 HDD SKUs; 34 RAID controller SKUs. Keep the old fleet alive through transition.

PowerEdge R650 go-forward parts: 591 Dell memory SKUs; 2961 SSD SKUs; 5623 HDD SKUs; 936 RAID controller SKUs; 128 PSU SKUs. Everything you need to stand up the new platform.

Next steps

Before you buy anything, send us your BOM. We will cross-check every part, flag the three or four items that silently brick cross-vendor (memory firmware tags, proprietary riser cards, RAID battery kits), and price the full migration in USD with ICD Care+ support for both old and new hardware during the cutover. One quote request, one support contract, both brands. That is what decades of running mixed estates teach you.

UCS decommissioning at 1U scale

1U UCS estates often include several C220 M5 servers per FI (Fabric Interconnect) domain. The migration typically unwinds whole UCS domains at once rather than server-by-server — service profile dependencies make partial migrations operationally awkward. Plan the cutover as a domain-level project.

Network rework

UCS fabric mode uses Cisco VICs providing converged 25/40/100G networking with service-profile-driven VLAN policy. Moving to standalone R650 with Intel X710 or Broadcom NICs is a real network architecture simplification — plan the switching-side changes (ACI policy removal or migration to standard VLAN trunking) as a paired work stream.

Frequently asked

What happens to the Fabric Interconnects after the last UCS server is removed? Either decommission the FIs (selling back via ICD buy-back, typical $800-$2,000 per unit) or repurpose them as general Cisco Nexus 9300-series switches (they run the same NX-OS under UCSM).
