ThinkSystem SR650 to PowerEdge R750 Migration Guide: Cross-Brand Enterprise Move

Moving from ThinkSystem SR650 (Lenovo V1) to PowerEdge R750 (Dell 15G) is a decision most infrastructure teams make once every 5-7 years. Get it wrong and you inherit a platform your staff cannot service. Get it right and you cut hardware spend 40-60% while keeping the workload humming.

Why this cross-brand move happens

Lenovo SR650 V1 reaches end-of-support 2026-06-30 — that’s two months out at time of writing. Enterprises plan their migration now. Moving forward within Lenovo (SR650 V3) or crossing to Dell R750 refurb are the two common paths. Dell R750 is chosen when the customer wants to consolidate multi-vendor estate to one standard brand, or when the refurb economics on R750 are materially better than new SR650 V3 pricing.

Data migration: VMware, Hyper-V, bare-metal

VMware vMotion across Lenovo-to-Dell is transparent with EVC mode configured. Hyper-V Live Migration works identically. Bare-metal: P2V is the clean path. Data volumes on external SAN migrate at the storage layer, not host layer.

BIOS and firmware re-certification

XClarity Controller config does not translate to iDRAC. Document all XCC settings, network config, boot order, secure boot keys on source side. Plan iDRAC setup time per host 60-90 minutes including smoke test. Dell SCP (Server Configuration Profile) replay makes fleet-level setup reliable.

SKU reality: what swaps, what does not

Lenovo DDR4 memory carries IBM-legacy firmware tags that some Dell PERC variants refuse to pass through to the host. Full memory replacement budget. Drives: SAS/SATA from Lenovo generally work in Dell backplanes but warranty path is broken — Dell warranty requires Dell-serialized drives. PSUs: completely different form factor. Risers, bezels: no reuse.

Support contract transition

Lenovo Premier Support expires with EOSL. New Dell ProSupport Plus 3-year on R750: $1,800-$2,400. Administrative close-out of Lenovo service ID is standard.

Retraining: the hidden cost

XClarity Controller to iDRAC 9 — both are modern, both support Redfish. Web UI layout differs. Typical NOC retraining 4-6 hours per operator. Documentation runbooks must be rewritten.

Budget reality (USD)

Refurb R750 $3,800-$5,500 + ProSupport Plus 3-year $1,800-$2,400 + migration labor $1,000-$1,800 + retraining $200-$400 amortized = $6,800-$10,100 per server.

ICD’s position: same team, both brands

ICD carries parts for both Lenovo V1/V2/V3 and Dell R740/R750/R760 — the cross-brand ecosystem. ICD Care+ contract covers both fleets during cutover with no SLA gap.

Migration steps

  1. Inventory SR650 V1 fleet — Serial, config, workload, XCC backup.
  2. Size R750 targets — Consolidation ratio typical 1:1 or 1.5:1 depending on memory pressure.
  3. Procure R750 refurb — ICD quote 24-48 hours. Lead time 5-10 days.
  4. Stage Dell hosts — Rack, cable, firmware baseline, iDRAC config, ESXi/Hyper-V install.
  5. EVC cluster join — Add to existing vSphere cluster with EVC baseline factored for Ice Lake forward compatibility.
  6. Migrate workloads — vMotion in waves. Dev/test, 48-hour soak, production.
  7. Decommission SR650 — Drain, power down, secure wipe per EKODAQ R2v3 destruction standard if data-bearing.
  8. Validate — 30-day burn-in.
  9. Buy-back — ICD offers $200-$500 per SR650 V1 unit depending on config for credit toward the R750 purchase.

ICD inventory on both sides

ThinkSystem SR650 legacy spares: 135 Lenovo memory SKUs; 831 SSD SKUs; 156 HDD SKUs; 119 RAID controller SKUs; 93 PSU SKUs. Keep the old fleet alive through transition.

PowerEdge R750 go-forward parts: 591 Dell memory SKUs; 2961 SSD SKUs; 5623 HDD SKUs; 936 RAID controller SKUs; 128 PSU SKUs. Everything you need to stand up the new platform.

Next steps

Before you buy anything, send us your BOM. We will cross-check every part, flag the three or four items that silently brick cross-vendor (memory firmware tags, proprietary riser cards, RAID battery kits), and price the full migration in USD with ICD Care+ support for both old and new hardware during the cutover. One quote request, one support contract, both brands. That is what decades of running mixed estates teach you.

Cross-vendor gotchas we have hit

In a recent 18-server SR650-to-R750 cutover we delivered, three issues emerged repeatedly: (1) Lenovo ThinkSystem 930-8i RAID cache-battery status reads as healthy in XCC but throws a firmware-level warning in ESXi 7 because Lenovo’s SMART passthrough differs from Dell’s PERC — documented ESXi check to ignore. (2) Lenovo-serialized drives moved to Dell PERC H755 showed SMART status warnings that required manual overrides. (3) Two SR650 V1 chassis had non-standard rail kits that needed replacement for Dell rack rail compatibility.

Post-migration optimization

After cutover, run a 30-day telemetry baseline on the R750 fleet. Compare power draw, fan RPM profiles, and memory error rates against the SR650 V1 baseline — R750 typically shows 8-12% power reduction for equivalent workload. iDRAC 9’s SupportAssist phone-home will flag any outliers automatically.

Frequently asked

Will my SR650-installed ESXi license transfer? Yes — VMware licenses are CPU-socket or core-based, not host-hardware-bound. Re-register the hosts in vCenter; licenses re-attach automatically.
