FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Feed independence, dual supplies and the Zambia lane.

Five to eight from Cairo, door to door. Zambia appears on our published Southern Africa card at that figure, and clearance is quoted separately from it.
Trace where the two supplies actually draw from. Dual supplies protect against a supply failing and against one feed failing, but only if the feeds are genuinely independent all the way back. Two cables into two rack strips that are both fed from the same upstream breaker give you one failure point wearing two cables. Everything looks redundant inside the cabinet.
Two strips is the visible half of the question. What matters is what is behind them: whether they are on different breakers, different distribution boards, and ideally different sources. That part of the path is usually outside the room the servers are in and outside what the server team can see, which is why it is assumed rather than verified.
By tracing one strip back to its origin and then the other, physically, and comparing. It is unglamorous work and it is the only way to know. Where a facility has grown in stages, paths that were once independent are frequently consolidated during an electrical change nobody flagged to the server team.
Supplies, cables and distribution hardware for ThinkSystem generations no longer sold. The trace itself is yours to do, and we would rather say so than sell a second supply that changes nothing.

Lenovo Support in Zambia After End of Life

Servers with dual power supplies going down together in a power event is not a hardware failure. It is a discovery about the building. The two supplies did everything asked of them, and they were both drawing, somewhere further back than anyone had looked, from the same source.

Redundancy Is a Property of the Whole Path

Two supplies protect against a supply failing and against a feed failing, provided the feeds are independent for their entire length. Independence has to hold back through the rack strip, the breaker, the distribution board and ideally to different sources. A path that diverges inside the cabinet and converges outside it offers the appearance of protection and none of the substance.

The visible half is the half that is checked

What a server team can see is two cables going into two strips, and that is genuinely two of everything at the point they can inspect. The rest of the path lives in rooms they do not manage, documented by people they may not know. So the question stops at the cabinet door, and the assumption that carries it further is never tested until an event tests it.

Facilities consolidate without telling anyone

Buildings change. Circuits are rebalanced, boards are replaced, a temporary arrangement during a refurbishment becomes permanent. Each of those is ordinary electrical work with no obvious relevance to servers, and any one can turn two independent paths into one. Nobody informs the server team because, from the electrical side, nothing about the servers changed.
