FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Replacement class, array pace and the Zambia lane.

Southern Africa covers it, at five to eight days door-to-door from Cairo, with Zambia named on that card. Clearance is additional to that published band and quoted on its own.
Compare the replacement against the surviving members on rotational speed and class, not just on capacity and interface. An array performs to its slowest member, because every stripe has to wait for the slowest participant. A disk of the right size and interface but a lower performance class will join, rebuild and work correctly, and it sets the pace for everything.
It would. The disk meets the requirements for membership, which are about capacity, interface and addressability. Performance class is not a barrier to joining an array, so there is nothing for the controller to object to. The consequence is an array that is healthy, complete and measurably slower than the one you had.
More than people expect, because it is not averaged. On a striped array every operation spanning that member waits for it, so a single slower disk can pull a substantial share of the array performance down toward its own. It is one of the few cases where one component genuinely governs the whole.
The exact specification of the surviving members, read from the controller rather than from the original order. We match class and speed as well as capacity, because a disk that rebuilds is not automatically a disk that restores the array you had.

HPE Support in Zambia After End of Life

An array that is measurably slower after a successful repair is a frustrating outcome, because every step of the repair went correctly. The disk was accepted, the rebuild completed, the array reports optimal. It is also now permanently slower, and it will stay that way until somebody works out why.

A Striped Array Runs at the Pace of Its Slowest Member

Operations spanning multiple disks complete only when every participating disk has finished. That makes performance a property of the slowest member rather than an average across them. Introduce one disk from a lower performance class and it does not reduce array performance slightly; it sets the floor for anything that touches it.

Membership and performance are different requirements

A controller admits a disk based on capacity, interface and addressability. Rotational speed and performance class are not part of that test, because a slower disk is a fully valid array member. So there is nothing for the controller to warn about. The array it produces is correct by every definition the hardware applies.

Capacity is what gets specified

Replacements are sourced by size and interface, because those are the attributes that obviously must match and the ones that appear in most records. Speed class is frequently absent from the asset documentation and from the conversation with a supplier. On an out-of-support estate buying from whatever is available, the cheaper and slower option is often the one in stock.

What ICD Supplies for HPE Estates in Zambia

Drives matched on class and speed to the members they are joining, Smart Array controllers reporting per-member characteristics, MSA shelves and canisters, ProLiant chassis and boards, cache and energy modules, and memory in the documented population sequence. For a Zambian consignee the Southern Africa figure applies: 5 to 8 days from Cairo. Everything is load-tested before dispatch, serial-noted, and warranted one to three years.
