FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Lenovo ThinkSystem, System x and drive-tray questions for operators in the Philippines.

Yes, both, and we identify the machine from its serial rather than from the badge on the front, which is what transition-era hardware requires.
Almost always the tray. An enterprise drive is installed in a carrier specific to the chassis family, and System x and ThinkSystem generations do not share them. A bare drive of exactly the right specification is not installable without the matching tray, and the mismatch is only discovered at the rack.
Sometimes, and it is the first thing to try. But a tray from a failed drive is only available if the old drive is coming out, which is not the case when you are adding capacity or the previous tray was damaged during removal. Relying on it is how a planned expansion stalls.
We state explicitly whether a tray is included and supply it where it is needed, because a drive that cannot be mounted has not solved anything.
Air baffles and drive-bay filler blanks. Both look cosmetic and both are part of the chassis airflow design — a machine run with bays open or a baffle missing runs measurably hotter, which matters in a warm climate.

The Part That Stops an Installation Is Usually Mechanical

A great many stalled repairs on Lenovo and System x estates have nothing to do with electronics. The drive is correct in capacity, interface and specification, and it cannot be installed because it arrived without the carrier the chassis requires — or with a carrier from a different generation. It is a trivial problem that consumes a full resupply cycle.

System x and ThinkSystem Do Not Share Trays

The x86 handover left estates with both families in the same rack room, and their drive carriers are not interchangeable. Two drives of identical specification are installable in one chassis and not the other purely on mechanical grounds. Nothing in a part number search surfaces this, so it is discovered at the rack with the machine already open.

Reusing the Old Tray Is Not a Plan

It works when a failed drive is coming out and the tray survives removal. It does not work when capacity is being added, when the previous carrier was damaged, or when the drive being replaced is needed for evidence. Treating tray reuse as the default is how a straightforward expansion becomes a wait.

Baffles and Blanks Are Part of the Cooling Design

The same category of oversight covers air baffles and drive-bay filler blanks, which look decorative and are not. A chassis run with open bays or a missing baffle loses its designed airflow path and runs hotter, which in a warm climate shortens the life of everything inside it. ICD states what is included, supplies the mechanical hardware alongside the component, and covers every item for one to three years.
