FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

HPE ProLiant, firmware-level and entitlement questions for operators in the Philippines.

Yes. We supply ProLiant and MSA components for generations past HPE end of support, with the firmware level confirmed rather than left unstated.
It freezes the estate where it stands. Servers keep running on whatever level they had when the entitlement lapsed, and every subsequent decision has to work within that level rather than around it. Nothing breaks immediately, which is why the consequence is usually discovered much later.
When a component arrives at a newer level than the estate. A drive, controller or system board manufactured later can carry firmware the frozen estate has never seen, and mixing levels inside an array or a chassis is where the trouble appears — not in the running of the old machine but in the fitting of a new part.
The firmware level of the specific unit, before it ships. A part number alone does not answer it, and a supplier who cannot tell you is asking you to find out by installing it.
Frequently yes, which is counterintuitive. For a frozen estate the ideal replacement is one at or near the level already in service, not the newest available, and that is a sourcing question rather than a technical one.

Losing Firmware Access Freezes an Estate

The end of an HPE support entitlement withdraws more than the response clock. It removes the ability to download firmware and driver bundles, which means the estate stays permanently at whatever level it held on the day the contract lapsed. Nothing stops working and no alarm is raised, so the consequence is almost never recognised at the time it occurs.

The Cost Appears When a New Part Arrives

A frozen estate runs indefinitely on its own terms. The difficulty begins when a replacement component manufactured later arrives carrying firmware the estate has never seen. Inside an array or a shared chassis, mixed levels are where behaviour becomes unpredictable — a controller that will not import an existing configuration, a drive that reports oddly, an enclosure that refuses a member. The old machine was never the problem; the new part is.

Which Makes Level a Specification, Not a Detail

For an estate that can still patch, the newest component is usually the right one. For a frozen estate the right component is the one nearest the level already in service, because there is no mechanism available to bring the rest of the estate up to meet it. That inverts the usual preference, and it is a sourcing problem rather than an engineering one.

What We State Before Shipping

ICD confirms the firmware level of the specific unit alongside the part number, because on a frozen estate a part number is an incomplete specification. We supply ProLiant, MSA and Smart Array components across generations HPE has retired, each tested, serial-verified and covered for one to three years.
