FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Drive firmware, array eviction and the Kenya lane.

Four to six days door-to-door from Cairo. Kenya is named on our published East Africa card and Mombasa is served on that same lane, with clearance quoted separately rather than absorbed into the figure.
Compare its firmware level against the minimum the controller supports. A drive below that level is often admitted, because admission is a compatibility check and not a qualification test, and it will rebuild normally. The failures appear later under real load, when the controller sees timing behaviour it treats as a fault and evicts the disk. The array is then degraded by the part that was meant to repair it.
Because those are two different decisions made at different times. Admission asks whether the device is addressable and the right class. Eviction happens when the controller observes response behaviour outside what it tolerates. Firmware is where a great deal of that timing behaviour lives, which is why the level matters more than the model number.
Sometimes, and it is worth checking first. Where a drive can be brought up to a supported level that is the cheaper repair. Where it cannot, or where the estate has no safe way to stage firmware on a production array, shipping a disk already at the right level is the lower-risk path. We will tell you which case you are in.
By recording the controller and its supported minimum before the disk is picked, then bench-running the drive at that level under load rather than power-cycling it and calling it tested. The level it shipped at is written against its serial, so if the array evicts it there is a record to argue from.

Lenovo Support in Kenya After End of Life

The worst kind of replacement disk is the one that works at first. It is the right model, the controller takes it, the array rebuilds to optimal, and the incident is closed. Then, some days later and under genuine load, the controller drops it. The array is degraded again, by the part that was supposed to repair it, and the second failure looks unrelated to the first.

Admission and Qualification Are Not the Same Test

When a drive is inserted the controller asks a narrow question: is this device addressable, is it the right class, can it be brought into this array. Firmware level is frequently not a barrier to that. The controller is not deciding whether the drive will behave correctly under sustained pressure; it is deciding whether the drive can participate. Those are separate questions and they are answered at separate times.

What the controller sees later

Under load the controller watches how long operations take and how the device reports itself. Firmware governs a great deal of that behaviour: error recovery timing, how long a drive will retry internally before answering, how it reports a marginal sector. A level below the controller minimum can sit outside the tolerance the controller enforces, and the controller does what it is designed to do with a device that appears to be failing. It removes it.

Why an out-of-support estate meets this more often

Drives arriving into an older estate have been somewhere else first. They come from a decommissioned machine, a local supplier, or a box of spares assembled over years, and the level they carry is whatever they carried when they were pulled. Nobody staged it deliberately. On a platform past its support date there is also no vendor tooling being run routinely to bring an estate to a common level, so the drift is permanent.

What ICD Supplies for Lenovo Estates in Kenya

ThinkSystem and ThinkServer drives shipped at a level the controller admits and keeps, in the tray the chassis addresses, alongside RAID adapters and cache modules, chassis and boards, memory at the populated rank and speed, supplies matched to their partner, and network adapters chosen for the switch in front of them. The published East Africa card covers Kenya at 4 to 6 days door-to-door from Cairo. Every unit is bench-run under load, filed against its serial, and backed one to three years.
