FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Optics, 25G links and the Kenya lane.

Four to six days door-to-door from Cairo, which is the East Africa card on our shipping page with Kenya named on it. Clearance sits outside that figure and is quoted separately so the lane number stays honest.
Check that both ends agree on forward error correction. At 25G the signal is usually run with an error-correction scheme, and there is more than one. If one end negotiates or is configured to one scheme and the far end to another, or one has it disabled, the port can stay down or come up and lose frames. The optic is fine, the cable is fine, and the link is still unusable.
Sometimes, and that is part of the difficulty. Behaviour varies by platform, software level and the optic type installed, so two devices can behave differently while both being correct. On mixed-vintage hardware, which is the normal condition in an out-of-support estate, assuming negotiation will resolve it is how this stays hidden through the whole build.
Because a link that will not come up is the exact symptom of a dead optic, and swapping the optic is the fastest test available. When a replacement behaves identically the conclusion is often a second bad unit or a bad port, and the configuration difference sits underneath all of it, unexamined.
By recording both ends before the part is chosen: platform, software level, port type and the correction behaviour each supports. That is the difference between an optic matching a data sheet and an optic matching a link. Each module is bench-run in the class of port it will serve and entered against its serial.

Cisco Support in Kenya After End of Life

A 25G link that refuses to come up is one of the most expensive ways to lose a maintenance window. The optics are the specified part, the cable is the right assembly, both ports are administratively up, and the interface stays down. The obvious suspect is the transceiver, and replacing it changes nothing, which usually produces the theory that two units were bad.

Both Ends Must Agree on How Errors Are Corrected

At 25G the signalling is typically run with forward error correction, and more than one scheme exists. The two ends of a link have to be using the same one. If they are not, the outcome is either a port that never reaches an up state or, worse, a port that comes up and quietly discards frames. Nothing about the optic or the fibre is wrong. The two devices are speaking with different assumptions about how the bits are protected.

Automatic negotiation is not a guarantee

Whether correction is negotiated, defaulted, or has to be set explicitly depends on the platform, the software level and the optic installed. Two devices can each behave exactly as documented and still disagree. That is tolerable on a matched pair bought together and it is a real hazard across mixed vintages, which is the ordinary state of an estate kept running past its support date.

The failure hides behind the correct diagnostic

Swapping the optic is the right first test and it is the reason this is often missed. The swap fails, so attention moves to ports, cables and the patch panel, all physical, all plausible. Meanwhile the setting that decides whether the two ends can talk is a line of configuration that nobody has compared, because comparing it means reading both devices rather than the one with the down interface.

What ICD Supplies for Cisco Estates in Kenya

Optics and transceivers picked for the speed, distance and correction behaviour of both ends, breakout and direct-attach assemblies rated for the lane being lit, Catalyst and Nexus switching, supervisors and line cards at the level the chassis is running, UCS server and fabric components, and supplies matched to the chassis airflow. Our published East Africa band puts Kenya at 4 to 6 days door-to-door from Cairo. Every module is bench-run under load, filed against its serial, and warranted one to three years.
