Memory within a bank is clocked together. When modules of different rated speeds are installed, the controller selects a rate every member can sustain, which is the rate of the slowest one present. A faster module added to a slower bank is not wasted in the sense of being unused — it is fully used, at a speed set by the module next to it.

The performance figure the upgrade was bought for does not move, and in some configurations the reported speed is lower than either module is rated for, because the common rate lands below both nominal figures.
