A Pair of Cables, One of Them Optional in Practice
An I/O drawer attaches to its frame through a pair of fabric cables. Both connected gives the drawer its full width. One connected gives it half — and, importantly, still gives it a working drawer. It initialises, presents its adapters to the partitions, and carries traffic correctly at a lower ceiling.
Half the Bandwidth Is Not an Error Condition
Nothing in that state is faulty, so nothing reports a fault. The drawer is healthy, the adapters are healthy, the frame is healthy. What exists is a performance limit that was never intended and is never announced, and it will be attributed to the workload, the storage or the application long before anyone counts cables at the back of a frame.

An initial installation where one cable was difficult to route and was left for later. A repair where the failed cable was replaced and its partner was not reseated. The frame reports the link width it negotiated for each drawer. Comparing that against the expected width settles it immediately, and it is worth doing after any work that touched the back of a frame — particularly for Algerian estates where equipment has been relocated between facilities during its life.
