FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Physical adapters, partition mobility and the Zimbabwe lane.

Southern Africa, five to eight days door-to-door from Cairo, with Zimbabwe named on that card. That is a standing published figure, with clearance quoted on top of it.
Check whether it owns a physical adapter directly. A partition using virtualised resources can generally be relocated, because everything it depends on can be presented on another frame. One that owns a physical card is tied to the frame that card sits in. The dependency is not in software; it is in the slot.
Usually for a good reason at the time: performance, a device that could not be virtualised, or an application requirement. The decision is sound and its consequence is durable. Years later the partition is still bound to that frame and the person who chose it is long gone.
It means frame maintenance requires taking that partition down, so what would have been a transparent operation becomes a negotiated outage. On hardware past its support date, where maintenance is needed more often and windows are harder to get, that constraint shapes what is practical rather than being a detail.
Sometimes, by moving the function to a virtualised equivalent, which is a project rather than a change. The first step is simply knowing which partitions are affected. We supply adapters and I/O hardware for Power generations no longer sold and will raise this when the part implies it.

IBM Support in Zimbabwe After End of Life

Discovering that a partition cannot be moved, on the day you planned to move it, turns a routine maintenance into a negotiation about downtime. Nothing has gone wrong. The partition owns a physical card, and a physical card lives in a particular frame, so the partition lives there too.

Virtualised Resources Move, Physical Ones Do Not

A partition built entirely on virtualised resources can be relocated because every dependency it has can be presented somewhere else. A partition that owns a physical adapter has a dependency that exists in a slot. There is no way to present that card on another frame, so the partition is bound to its hardware as firmly as if it were a standalone machine.

The original decision was usually correct

Direct ownership is chosen for performance, for a device with no virtualised equivalent, or because an application demanded it. Those are legitimate reasons and the choice was right when it was made. What does not travel with the decision is a note explaining that this partition is now immobile, and that fact is inherited by people who had no part in it.

It constrains what maintenance is possible

Frame-level work on an out-of-support estate is needed more often, not less, and windows are harder to obtain. A partition that cannot be evacuated turns every such task into an outage to be argued for. Over time that pressure tends to mean the maintenance is deferred, which is how frames end up running longer than anybody intended between services.
