FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Extension, usable capacity and the Zimbabwe lane.

The Southern Africa card, at five to eight days door-to-door from Cairo, with Zimbabwe named on it. Clearance is quoted apart from that published band.
Replacing the members raises the capacity of the array, and it does not by itself change the logical drive presented on top of it. That logical drive was created at a size, and it keeps that size until somebody extends it, and then the filesystem above has to be extended as well. You have bought the space. It is sitting below two layers that were never told about it.
Because growing a volume under a running filesystem is a deliberate operation with real consequences, and doing it without being asked would be dangerous. The controller correctly makes the capacity available and waits to be told what to do with it.
Usually the logical drive on the controller, then whatever the operating system layers on top, then the filesystem. Each is a separate step, and stopping after the first is what produces the reported symptom. It is worth writing the sequence down before starting rather than discovering the next layer each time.
Whether your controller generation supports extending the logical drive in place at all, because if it does not the plan is a migration rather than an extension and the disk order is only part of the job. We supply drives and controllers against the array and the volume together.

HPE Support in Zimbabwe After End of Life

Replacing every disk in an array with larger ones and finding the volume unchanged is a disheartening result for an expensive purchase. Nothing failed, and the capacity is genuinely there. It is sitting underneath a logical drive and a filesystem that were created at a size and have not been told anything has changed.

Capacity Exists at Several Layers and Each Is Told Separately

Larger member disks increase what the array holds. The logical drive presented from that array was defined at a particular size, and it retains that size until extended. Above it the operating system and filesystem have their own view, also fixed at creation. Adding capacity at the bottom changes nothing visible until each layer above is deliberately grown.

Automatic growth would be the wrong default

Expanding a volume beneath a live filesystem is consequential and, done at the wrong moment or in the wrong order, damaging. It is correct that the controller makes new capacity available and then waits. The behaviour that surprises people is the safe one, which is why it persists across generations.

Stopping one layer short is the usual outcome

The logical drive is extended, the capacity still does not appear, and the conclusion is drawn that the extension failed. In fact it worked and the filesystem above has not been touched. Each layer looks like the last one, so the sequence is easy to abandon halfway, and on an out-of-support estate the documentation describing the full path is rarely to hand.

What ICD Supplies for HPE Estates in Zimbabwe

Drives supplied against what the volume above them can actually use, Smart Array controllers able to extend the logical drive in place, MSA shelves and canisters, ProLiant chassis and boards, cache and energy modules, and memory laid out as the generation documents. A Zimbabwean address falls at 5 to 8 days from Cairo on the Southern Africa card. Everything ships proven under load, serial-noted, and warranted one to three years.
