When IBM Withdrawal Dates Land in the Middle of a UAE Lease
A large share of UAE enterprise hardware is leased rather than owned, on three or five year terms agreed with a financier rather than with IBM. IBM's withdrawal-from-service dates do not consult those terms. The result is a familiar and awkward position: a Power frame or an x-series estate that is contractually yours for another eighteen months and unsupported by the manufacturer from next quarter.
The obligation does not end with the support
The lease still has to be serviced, the equipment still has to be returned in working order, and the workload still has to run. Handing the frame back early usually costs more than maintaining it. Third-party support bridges precisely that gap, and for a leased asset the economics are unusually clear: the maintenance cost is a fraction of an early-termination penalty.
Sourcing IBM parts into the Emirates
Three to four days from Cairo stock per our published shipping times, clearing at Jebel Ali or Dubai Airport free zone; customs clearance can add one to three days. Spares move against an existing asset, so documentation is lighter than importing a replacement frame — which matters more with IBM hardware, where a replacement is rarely a like-for-like purchase.
Working from machine type, not inherited part numbers
IBM's FRU numbering defeats most teams before availability is ever tested. We identify parts from the machine type and model, so a request that began as an unobtainable FRU usually resolves to a part we hold.
