FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

IBM tape drive and library attachment questions for operators in Tunisia.

Two to four days door-to-door from Cairo, which is the published North Africa band, and Tunisia is named on it.
Generation is only half the specification. A tape drive attaches over a particular interface, and the library expects the interface its own attachment is built around. A drive of the correct generation on the wrong interface cannot be brought into the library at all, regardless of the media it supports.
Often the sled differs too, since the sled carries the interface connections. A drive can be the right generation and the right speed and still not seat into a library expecting a different attachment, which is why generation alone is an unsafe basis for ordering.
Libraries outlive several drive generations and are frequently extended over a decade. The attachment was decided once, at installation, and the documentation that recorded it is usually older than the people now buying drives for it.
The library model and its attachment type, not just the drive generation. We supply drives, sleds, library hardware and host adapters. Tunisia sits inside our published North Africa band, 2 to 4 days door to door from Cairo. Each unit is proved on test, registered to its own serial, and covered one to three years.

Generation Is Half the Specification

A tape drive is defined by its generation, which determines the media it reads and writes, and by its interface, which determines how it attaches to the library and the host. Both have to match. A drive of exactly the right generation on an interface the library was not built around cannot be installed into that library at all — the media compatibility everybody checked is irrelevant because the drive never joins.

The Sled Carries the Difference

On most libraries the drive sits in a sled that provides its connections, and the sled differs by interface. This is why a drive can be correct on paper, correct on generation, correct on speed and still not seat. The mismatch is mechanical and electrical at once, and it is discovered at the moment of installation rather than at the moment of ordering.

Libraries outlive their documentation

A tape library commonly serves through several drive generations and a decade or more of extension. The attachment was chosen once, during an installation that predates most of the current team, and the record of it is older than anyone still buying consumables and drives for the system. So the ordering decision is made from the one attribute everybody knows.

Quote against the library, not the drive

The library model and its attachment type determine which drives are usable. Establishing them is a documentation step that takes minutes and removes an entire class of returned hardware, particularly on Tunisian estates where a tape system may be the oldest thing in the room and the most quietly depended upon.

What ICD Supplies for IBM Estates in Tunisia

Tape drives matched on interface as well as generation, drive sleds, library frames and robotics, host adapters, Power system components, ECC and CDIMM memory confirmed against the frame build, and redundant supplies for frames with no active service contract. We ask for the library model and attachment before quoting. Tunisia sits inside our published North Africa band, 2 to 4 days door to door from Cairo. Each unit is proved on test, registered to its own serial, and covered one to three years.
