FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

HPE backplane cabling and bay visibility questions for operators in Tunisia.

The North Africa band applies: 2 to 4 days door-to-door from Cairo, with Tunisia named on that published card.
Look at the internal cabling before the drives. A controller reaches the backplane through a specific set of ports, and which bays each port serves is decided by how the harness is routed. Cable only one connector and half the bays are unreachable while every drive in them is healthy and powered.
It has nothing to report. An unconnected backplane segment is not a fault state — it is a cabling choice, and chassis are legitimately shipped in partly cabled configurations when they were ordered with fewer drives.
Frequently that is exactly it. A chassis bought with eight drives and cabled for eight is later filled to sixteen, and the second harness was never part of that purchase because nobody knew to ask for it.
Internal SAS harnesses, backplanes, Smart Array controllers with the ports the backplane expects, drives for the bays actually wired, and supplies for a fully populated chassis. Tunisia is inside the published North Africa band at 2 to 4 days door-to-door from Cairo. Each item is checked on the bench, listed against its own serial, and backed one to three years.

The Harness Decides What the Controller Can Reach

A Smart Array controller connects to the drive backplane through a defined set of ports, and which bays each port serves is a function of how the internal harness is routed. Connect one port where the chassis supports two and half the bays are unreachable. Every drive in them spins, draws power and is entirely healthy, and the controller has no path to any of them.

An Uncabled Bay Is Not a Fault

Nothing reports this, because there is nothing to report. Partly cabled chassis are a legitimate shipping configuration for machines ordered with fewer drives than the bays allow. The chassis is correct, the controller is correct, and the gap between them is a purchasing decision made years earlier that nobody wrote on the asset record.

The estate grew and the harness did not

The common history is a machine bought with half its bays populated and cabled accordingly, then filled over subsequent years as capacity demand grew. Each added drive was bought as a drive. The second harness was never part of any of those purchases because the constraint was invisible until the bays ran out.

Establish the cabling before buying drives

How many backplane connectors are populated, and which bays they serve, is answerable by looking inside the chassis and against the documentation for that model. It determines whether additional drives will be usable at all, and it is considerably cheaper to establish before an order than during an installation window with disks that cannot be seen.
