Thin-provisioned volumes are presented at their full declared size while consuming only what has actually been written, so hosts see the size they were promised. Taking volumes offline is the protective choice

Faced with a write it cannot place, the array stops rather than corrupts. That is correct and it is abrupt: multiple volumes across unrelated systems become unavailable together, which looks like a major array failure rather than a capacity event. On out-of-support hardware, where nobody is reviewing utilisation reports, the first sign is usually the outage itself.
