The Storwize Expansion Trap in Saudi Data Centres
IBM Storwize V5000 and V7000 and the DS3500 and DS8000 families are widespread across Saudi healthcare, education and utilities. They were sold on a promise of orderly expansion: add a shelf, add capacity. That promise holds only while IBM still sells the shelf. Once an array reaches end of marketing, the expansion enclosure that matches its firmware level becomes the constraint on the whole system, and the array cannot grow even though nothing has failed.
Why this bites harder than a drive failure
A failed drive is a replacement. A capacity wall is a migration. Saudi institutions frequently discover the wall at the worst moment — during a programme that needs more storage now — and the only answers offered are a forklift replacement or an unplanned tender. Sourcing a matching expansion enclosure and the correct drives on the secondary market keeps the array growing while a proper storage strategy is agreed.
Firmware level is the detail that decides it
Expansion shelves and drives must match the array's firmware and its supported drive list, not just the model. We work from the array's own configuration report rather than the model badge, because the wrong shelf at the right model number is a very expensive way to learn this.
