FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

IBM FlashSystem distributed array, rebuild and delivery questions for operators in France.

France is in our published European band at 3 to 5 days door to door by express courier from Cairo, plus clearance.
It spreads the work. Rather than reconstructing onto a single dedicated spare drive, a distributed array reserves spare capacity across every member and rebuilds in parallel across all of them. That is dramatically faster, which is the point, and it means the rebuild draws on reserved capacity rather than a physical spare disk.
Not as a discrete drive, and that is the part that catches people. The spare is distributed capacity, so after a rebuild the array has consumed its reserve and is protected only until that reserve is restored by fitting a replacement module.
The array is rebuilt and no longer has spare capacity for the next failure. It reports healthy because the rebuild completed successfully, and the reserve it would need for a second failure is gone until a module is fitted.
A flash module matched to the array, because the window between a completed rebuild and a restored reserve is the one that looks safe and is not.

A Rebuild With No Spare Drive In It

Traditional RAID reconstructs a failed drive onto a dedicated hot spare. A distributed array reserves spare capacity across every member instead and rebuilds in parallel across all of them, which is very much faster and is the reason the design exists. The consequence is that there is no spare drive to point at — the spare is capacity, spread thin.

Which Changes What "Rebuild Complete" Means

When a traditional rebuild finishes, the hot spare has become a member and the array is short of a spare. When a distributed rebuild finishes, the reserved capacity has been consumed and the array is short of reserve. Both are the same situation and only the first one is obvious, because in the second there is no empty bay and nothing missing to see.

The Window That Looks Safe

After a successful rebuild the array reports healthy, performance has returned to normal, and the incident is closed. What has not been restored is the reserve, so the array is protected against the next failure only to the extent the remaining capacity allows. It is the period most likely to be treated as resolved and is the period with the least margin.

One Module Closes It

Fitting a replacement flash module restores the distributed reserve and ends the exposure. ICD supplies flash and NVMe modules matched to the array and its layout, alongside enclosure and Power components for generations past IBM end of support, shipped to France in 3 to 5 days, tested and covered for one to three years.
