The IBM Power Estates in Egypt That Cannot Simply Move to x86
Egyptian banks, insurers and public utilities built core systems on IBM Power — S812, S822 and S924, and older POWER7 frames before them — running AIX or IBM i. Those workloads are not portable in any casual sense. The application is compiled for the architecture, the database is tuned to it, and the vendor who wrote it may no longer exist. When IBM issues a withdrawal-from-service notice, the hardware becomes unsupported long before the software has anywhere to go.
Why a lift-and-shift is not the answer here
Migrating an AIX core banking system to Linux on x86 is a multi-year programme with a real chance of failure, and most Egyptian institutions that have tried it will say so privately. The rational interim is to keep the Power estate healthy and supported while the replacement is built properly. That means someone has to supply DIMMs, power supplies, fans, disks and the occasional planar for frames IBM has closed.
The FRU catalogue problem
IBM parts are identified by FRU number, and the same physical component often carries several FRUs across machine types. Teams routinely conclude a part is unobtainable when in fact they searched the wrong number. ICD works from the machine type and model — 8286-42A and the like — rather than a part number handed over by someone who left three years ago.
System x underneath the Power estate
Most Egyptian IBM sites also run x3550 and x3650 M4 and M5 for the surrounding services. Those moved to Lenovo in 2014, so the support lineage differs from the Power frames in the same room. We cover both and translate between the two catalogues.
