Two Estates on One Platform

Published guidance about IBM Power overwhelmingly assumes AIX, and a substantial number of Canadian Power estates do not run it. IBM i installations share the underlying hardware and very little else about how they are operated, which means most of the advice available to them describes a situation they are not in.

Older, Fewer, and Self-Contained

The characteristic IBM i estate is older than its AIX counterpart, consolidated onto a small number of machines, and far more likely to keep all its data on internal disk rather than an external array. That combination changes the hardware profile entirely: the components that matter are internal drives, the storage adapter and the enclosure, rather than fabric and external storage.

The Applications Are Why

These platforms carry business applications developed in place over decades, maintained rather than replaced, and deeply specific to the organisation running them. There is no migration path that is merely technical, so the hardware is sustained indefinitely and passes end of support while remaining entirely central to how the business operates.

Concentration Changes the Stocking Question

With everything internal and only a few machines, one machine failing is a large proportion of the estate rather than a fraction of it. Internal drives, the storage adapter and a power supply are the components whose absence stops the business.
