FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Dell PERC, self-encrypting drive and key management questions for operators in Canada.

Yes, and where an order involves a storage controller on an encrypted array we raise the key-management question before you buy rather than after.
Because the controller participates in unlocking the drives. Where local key management is in use, the key material is held by the controller, and a replacement arrives knowing nothing. The drives are intact and encrypted, and the new controller cannot unlock them.
Usually not, provided the escrowed key or passphrase exists and can be retrieved. But it is retrieved from wherever it was recorded when encryption was first enabled, which may have been years ago by somebody who has since left.
Whether key management is local to the controller or external, and if local, where the escrowed key is held and who can produce it today. Both answers take minutes to establish beforehand and hours to establish during an outage.
A single drive swap into an existing encrypted array is normally handled by the controller and is straightforward. It is the controller itself, holding the key material, that carries the risk.

The Controller Is Part of the Encryption, Not Just the Storage

On a Dell array using self-encrypting drives with local key management, the PERC controller holds the key material that unlocks them. That makes a controller replacement categorically different from other component swaps: the drives are physically intact and fully encrypted, and a replacement controller arrives with no knowledge of how to open them.

It Presents as Total Data Loss

The machine returns, the array is detected, and nothing can be read. Every indication points at catastrophic loss. In nearly all cases the data is entirely intact and what is missing is the key — but establishing that, under pressure, with a regulated workload waiting, is an expensive way to find out.

The Escrow Was Set Up Years Ago by Somebody Else

This is the practical difficulty. Encryption was enabled once, at commissioning, and the key or passphrase was recorded somewhere by whoever did it. On an estate old enough to be out of vendor support, that person has frequently moved on and the location of the escrow is institutional memory rather than documentation.

Two Questions, Minutes Each, Asked Beforehand

Is key management local to the controller or external, and if local, where is the escrowed key and who can produce it today. ICD raises both when quoting a controller for an encrypted array rather than shipping the part and letting them surface in the maintenance window. Components across PowerEdge and Dell EMC generations past Dell support, tested and covered for one to three years.
