FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Robotics calibration, relocation and the Botswana lane.

The Southern Africa row: five to eight days from Cairo to the door, Botswana listed on it. That is a standing published band, and clearance is charged on top.
The robotics almost certainly need recalibrating. A picker works to taught positions for every slot and drive, and those are learned relative to the physical frame. Move or flex the rack and the real positions shift by a small amount while the taught ones do not. The mechanism is healthy and reaching for where a slot used to be.
Tolerances differ across the unit. Slots near where the calibration was taught remain within margin, and those furthest away fall outside it, so failures cluster at one end or one column. That partial success is what makes it look like intermittent media or drive trouble rather than a geometry problem.
It is the reason to treat this urgently. A misaligned pick can drop a cartridge inside the enclosure, which risks the media and can jam the mechanism, turning a calibration job into a physical recovery with the library out of service.
Robotics assemblies, pickers, magazines and drives for library generations no longer sold. Recalibration itself is a service action on the unit, and we would rather tell you that than sell parts for a fault that is geometry.

IBM Support in Botswana After End of Life

A tape library that starts missing cartridges after the rack was moved has usually not developed a fault. It has been displaced. The picker is working precisely, to a map of where everything used to be, and everything is now a few millimetres from where that map says it is.

A Picker Works to Taught Positions, Not to What It Can See

Library robotics are calibrated against the physical frame: each slot and drive has a learned position the mechanism moves to. That calibration assumes the geometry it was taught in. Moving the rack, or flexing it during a move, shifts the real positions slightly while the taught ones remain exactly as they were.

Partial success disguises the cause

Not every slot falls outside tolerance. Positions near the calibration reference stay within margin and continue working, while the furthest ones fail. The result is a library that mostly works with failures clustered at one end, which reads as a batch of bad media or a failing drive rather than as a geometry problem affecting the whole unit.

A dropped cartridge escalates it

A pick that misses can release a cartridge inside the enclosure. That risks the media itself and can obstruct the mechanism, which turns a calibration task into a physical recovery with the library out of service and somebody working inside it. That possibility is why this is worth addressing as soon as the pattern appears rather than after a few more retries.

What ICD Supplies for IBM Estates in Botswana

Robotics assemblies, pickers, magazines and media, tape drives for library generations no longer sold, Power Systems frames and boards, host and fabric adapters selected for the opposing port, and memory positioned as the frame was ordered to carry it. Botswana runs at 5 to 8 days from Cairo on the Southern Africa card we publish. Each unit is powered and checked before dispatch, serial-filed, and covered one to three years.
