FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

HPE thermal and ambient-class questions for operators in Spain.

Yes, and the mechanism is not dramatic failure but accelerated wear. Every server is specified for an ambient class, a stated inlet temperature range it is designed to operate within. Above that range the machine does not fault. It compensates, and the compensation itself is the cost.
It runs the fans harder. Fan power rises steeply rather than proportionally with speed, so a modest rise in inlet temperature produces a disproportionate rise in fan duty, noise and electrical draw. The fans themselves are then consumables wearing at a faster rate than the rest of the machine.
Power supplies are rated for a given output at a given inlet temperature and derate above it, so headroom you believed you had is quietly reduced. Sustained higher junction temperatures also shorten the life of capacitors and of the flash in cache modules and boot devices. None of this appears as an event in a log.
The management controller records inlet temperature and fan speeds, and a room that has drifted shows as a fan baseline that sits higher than it used to for the same workload. That baseline is the measurement worth watching, because it moves long before anything fails.
Fan assemblies and kits, processor-matched heatsinks, power supplies, and the cache and boot components most affected by sustained heat, all shipped from Cairo and quoted against the serial so the part matches the exact configuration. Every unit is tested and carries one to three years of warranty.

Hardware Has a Stated Ambient Class, and Rooms Drift Away From It

Every enterprise server carries an ambient specification: the inlet air temperature range within which it is designed to operate. Spanish facilities frequently sit above that range for part of the year, either because cooling was sized for a smaller load than the room now carries or because the room was never a data centre to begin with. The machines do not stop. They adapt, and the adaptation is where the cost lands.

The Fan Curve Is Not Linear

The first and largest response to warm inlet air is fan speed. Fan power consumption rises much faster than fan speed does, so a few degrees at the inlet can translate into a substantial increase in fan duty, audible noise and electrical draw for exactly the same computational work. The fans become the fastest-wearing component in the chassis, and they wear quietly, because a machine with fans at high duty is behaving correctly rather than failing.

Power supplies lose rated output as they warm

A supply rated at a given wattage is rated at a stated inlet temperature. Above it the unit derates, delivering less than its label. An estate planned with what looked like comfortable power headroom can be operating with much less, and the discovery usually happens when an additional card or a populated drive bay pushes demand past what the supplies can actually provide at the temperature they are actually running at.

The slow damage nobody sees

Sustained higher temperatures shorten the life of electrolytic capacitors, of the flash in boot devices and controller cache modules, and of the drives themselves. None of this generates a log entry at the time. It surfaces years early as a cluster of component failures that read as bad luck rather than as an environmental record.

The Measurement That Tells You First

Management controllers record inlet temperature and fan speed. The useful signal is not a single reading but the baseline: the fan duty the machine settles at for a familiar workload. When that baseline rises over months, the room has changed even if no alert has fired. ICD supplies fan assemblies and kits, processor-matched heatsinks, power supplies, and the cache and boot components most exposed to sustained heat, shipped from Cairo and quoted against the serial so the part matches the configuration it is going into. Every unit is tested and serial-recorded, with one to three years of warranty.
