FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Dell drive-capacity and backplane questions for operators in Spain.

Because the bays are not the constraint. The backplane behind them is, and it is the part that decides how many disks the controller can address and at what speed. A chassis sold in an eight-bay configuration often has the sheet metal for more bays and a backplane that cannot reach them.
Sometimes, and it is a real option we supply parts for, but it is a chassis-level job rather than a drive swap. The replacement has to match the chassis generation, the controller in front of it and the cabling harness, which is why we ask for the service tag before quoting rather than after.
A direct-attach backplane gives each drive its own path to the controller, so the disk count is limited by the controller ports. An expander backplane shares paths between more drives than the controller has ports. The second lets you fit more disks; the first gives each disk more bandwidth. Which one you have is a property of the machine, not a setting.
It affects which drives are usable rather than which exist. A drive faster than the backplane generation will negotiate down to what the backplane supports, so paying for the faster part buys nothing until the board behind the bays is changed too.
Shipped from Cairo, quoted against the service tag so the backplane, carrier and controller are matched as a set rather than as three separate line items. Every unit is serial-identified and tested before dispatch and carries one to three years of warranty.

The Bays Are Not What Limits the Disk Count

A recurring request from Spanish operators is straightforward on its face: the PowerEdge has empty drive bays, capacity is short, and the plan is to fill them. The part that decides whether this works is not visible from the front of the machine. It is the backplane, the board the drives seat into, and it fixes both how many disks the controller can address and how much bandwidth each one gets.

Why the Same Model Behaves Differently

Two servers with identical model numbers can have been built with different backplanes. One presents eight bays wired directly to the controller. Another presents the same chassis with an expander that shares controller ports across a larger number of drives. The sheet metal looks the same and the service tag does not read as a capacity specification, which is why a well-planned expansion can fail at installation for reasons nobody wrote down when the machine was commissioned.

Direct-attach against expander, and what each one costs you

A direct-attach backplane gives every drive a dedicated path. The maximum disk count is whatever the controller has ports for, and each drive gets full bandwidth. An expander backplane multiplexes those ports, so more disks fit but they share the available throughput. Neither is a fault. They are different design decisions made at build time, and they determine which upgrade paths are open years later.

The part where money is wasted

Because the negotiation happens silently, buying drives faster than the backplane generation produces no measurable change. The disk reports its own capability, the backplane reports a lower one, and the link settles at the lower figure without an error anywhere. An operator can pay a premium for newer drives, install them correctly, and see exactly the performance the old ones delivered.

What ICD Supplies for Dell Estates in Spain

Drive backplanes and their cabling harnesses, generation-correct drive carriers, PERC controllers matched to the backplane topology, SAS and NVMe drives that suit the path actually available, ECC memory by generation, and redundant power supplies sized for a populated bay rather than an empty one. We quote against the service tag so the set is matched before anything ships. Every unit is identified by its own serial and tested, with that serial recorded against the order, and carries one to three years of warranty.
