FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Enclosure boundaries, failure domains and the Namibia lane.

On the Southern Africa card, five to eight days door-to-door from Cairo, with Namibia named on it. Clearance is charged on top of that published band.
Check whether that volume spanned both shelves. A redundant array survives losing a member; it does not survive losing several at once, and an enclosure failure takes every drive in that enclosure simultaneously. A volume with members in two shelves is protected against a disk failure and not against a shelf failure, which is a much larger unit of loss.
Usually for capacity or performance, and often because the array was extended later into whatever bays were free, which happened to be in the other shelf. Each decision was reasonable. Nobody stood back and asked what the failure domain had become.
List each volume and the physical location of every member. Where a volume has members in more than one enclosure, an enclosure failure is a volume failure. That mapping takes an afternoon and is almost never on file.
Keep a volume inside one enclosure where you can, and where spanning is genuinely needed, use a protection level that survives losing the members in one shelf. We supply enclosures, drives and expansion cabling and would rather discuss the layout than ship disks into a design that cannot survive the failure it is most likely to meet.

HPE Support in Namibia After End of Life

Losing an entire volume when one enclosure failed, on an array that was redundant by design, is a hard conversation to have afterwards. The redundancy was real and it was sized for the wrong event. It protected against a disk failing, and what happened was a shelf failing, which takes many disks at the same instant.

Redundancy Is Sized Against a Unit of Failure

A parity array survives the loss of a member, or of two depending on its protection level. An enclosure failure removes every drive in that enclosure at once. If a volume has members spread across two shelves, losing one shelf removes far more members than the protection level was chosen to absorb. The array behaves exactly as specified; the event was larger than the specification.

Spanning happens by growth, not by design

Almost nobody deliberately designs a volume across two enclosures. It happens when an array is extended and the free bays are in the next shelf, or when capacity is added under time pressure. Each individual step is sensible and none of them prompts the question of what the failure domain now is. The exposure is assembled gradually by reasonable decisions.

The mapping is rarely written down

Which physical enclosure each member sits in is available from the controller and is almost never recorded anywhere a planner would see. So the risk is invisible in documentation and visible only in an inventory nobody has run. On an out-of-support estate that has grown in stages over a decade, it is worth an afternoon to establish before it is established for you.

What ICD Supplies for HPE Estates in Namibia

MSA enclosures, drives placed with the enclosure boundary in mind, Smart Array controllers that report where each member physically sits, expansion cabling that keeps a second shelf reachable, ProLiant chassis and boards, and memory ordered as this generation lays out its channels. Our published figure for Namibia is the Southern Africa one: 5 to 8 days from Cairo. Everything ships proven under load, serial-recorded, and warranted one to three years.
