Storage and Servers Do Not Age at the Same Rate

An organisation that bought an HPE storage array and a set of ProLiant servers in the same project will usually find the array reaches end of support several years before the servers do. This is not a procurement mistake. Storage platforms simply move through their lifecycle faster, and buying them together does not make them expire together.

Attention Follows the Servers

Lifecycle planning is almost always organised around the compute estate, because that is how budgets and refresh cycles are framed. The array is recorded as attached equipment rather than as a platform with its own date, so it slips out of support without appearing in any review. The component with the widest reach in the estate becomes the one nobody is tracking.

Which Inverts the Risk

A server failure affects the workloads on that server. An array controller failure affects every host attached to it, which on a consolidated estate is most of the business. So the platform that left support first, quietly, is also the one whose failure would be largest — exactly the wrong way round from how the attention is distributed.

Two Questions Worth Answering Before It Matters

Can the controller still be obtained, and does a spare cache battery exist for it. Both are answerable in an afternoon and both are usually unknown. ICD sources MSA controllers, enclosures, carriers and batteries across generations HPE has retired, supplies them independently of any server entitlement, and covers each item for one to three years.
