FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

HPE array membership and drive handling questions for operators in Germany.

Within the published European band of 3 to 5 days door-to-door from Cairo, which names Germany explicitly. That is the window a German facility should plan around.
Almost certainly not. When a member disk disappears and reappears, the controller cannot assume the data on it is still consistent with the rest of the array, because writes may have happened in the interval. Rather than risk silent corruption it marks the member as failed and expects a rebuild.
It is conservative, and deliberately so. The controller has no way to know that nothing was written during those seconds, and the cost of being wrong is undetectable data corruption. Given that choice, forcing a rebuild is the right engineering decision even though it is expensive for the operator who did nothing harmful.
You are now in a rebuild you did not plan, with the array degraded for its duration and exposed to a second failure. On a large drive that window is long. An inspection that was meant to take a moment has put the volume into exactly the state everybody tries to avoid.
Identify drives through the controller rather than physically: ask it to illuminate the drive you mean, and read serials from the management interface instead of from the label. We supply array drives so a rebuild is never additionally waiting on a part. Germany is on the 3 to 5 day European lane; each unit is bench-tested, tied to its serial, and covered one to three years.

A Member That Leaves and Returns Is No Longer Trusted

When a disk is removed from a working Smart Array and put back, the controller faces a question it cannot answer: was anything written to the array while that member was absent? If so, the returning disk holds stale data, and treating it as current would corrupt the volume invisibly. Because the controller cannot know, it assumes the worst and marks the member failed, expecting a rebuild to bring it back into consistency.

Conservative by Design, Expensive in Practice

This is the correct decision and it is unforgiving. A five-second removal to read a label produces the same outcome as a genuine failure, because the controller has no mechanism for distinguishing them. German operators describe this to us as having broken a perfectly good disk by looking at it, and in a sense that is exactly what happened — not to the disk, but to its standing in the array.

The cost is the exposure, not the disk

The drive is undamaged and will rebuild normally. What has been spent is protection: the array is degraded for the duration of a rebuild nobody planned, and during that period one further failure ends the volume. On high-capacity drives the rebuild is long, so a momentary inspection can put a production array at risk for a day or more.

Identify through the controller instead

Every reason to pull a drive for identification has a non-destructive alternative. Ask the controller to illuminate the drive you mean and read the bay. Take serial numbers from the management interface rather than from the physical label. Where a drive genuinely must come out, confirm first that the array is healthy and that you are prepared for the rebuild that will follow.

What ICD Supplies for HPE Estates in Germany

Array drives held so an unplanned rebuild is not additionally waiting on procurement, Smart Array controllers with the cache their generation expects, genuine carriers that keep a disk reporting through the controller, ProLiant chassis components, ECC memory completing a bank from one source, and hot-swap supplies for chassis the authorised channel has dropped. Germany appears on the published European card, so parts run a 3 to 5 day door-to-door lane from Cairo. Each unit is bench-tested, tied to its serial, and covered one to three years.
