Read the Exclusions, Not the Inclusions

Maintenance agreements are usually described by what they cover, and for local contracts on out-of-support HPE hardware the important text is what they exclude. A great many cover attendance, diagnosis and labour while explicitly excluding the component. That is a legitimate commercial structure, priced accordingly, and it is easy to read as full coverage.

The Gap Appears Mid-Incident

It becomes visible the first time something significant fails. The engineer attends within the agreed window, diagnoses accurately, and explains that the part is a separate purchase. Nobody has failed to honour anything — the contract has performed exactly as written — and the system is still down while procurement begins from a standing start.

The Two Arrangements Are Complementary

A labour contract is genuinely valuable: it provides a skilled person quickly, which is the hard thing to arrange at short notice. Holding the components yourself supplies the other half. Together they close the gap; either alone leaves it open, and the combination costs less than a contract that includes parts on hardware this age.

Four Components Cover Most of It

Drives, power supplies, and the array controller with its battery account for the large majority of events where an engineer attends and cannot finish. ICD supplies those across ProLiant and MSA generations past HPE end of support, tested, serial-verified and covered for one to three years — so the visit and the part arrive together.
