FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Dell array drive matching, firmware and rebuild questions for operators in Brazil.

Yes, matched on model, firmware level and sector format to the drives already in the array rather than on capacity alone.
It is a manageable one that becomes acute during a rebuild. Drives that differ in firmware, rotational speed or sector format can behave inconsistently under the sustained load of a rebuild, and a rebuild is precisely when the array has no protection left.
Because normal operation never asks every drive to perform at its limit simultaneously. A rebuild does. A drive that is marginal under sustained load has no reason to reveal itself during ordinary use, and every reason to fail during the one operation that cannot tolerate it.
It can prevent a drive joining the array at all. A drive formatted differently from the existing members may be rejected outright, which is better than being accepted and behaving oddly, but it is discovered with the array already degraded.
The model, firmware level and sector format of the drives already present, not just the capacity. We ask for those, because a drive that matches on capacity alone is a guess.

An Array Built Up, Not Bought

Where imported hardware is expensive, arrays get extended rather than replaced, and each extension uses whatever was obtainable and affordable that quarter. After several years the array is a genuine mixture: different firmware levels, sometimes different rotational speeds, occasionally different sector formats, all presenting as one healthy volume.

Normal Operation Hides It Completely

Day to day, no drive is asked to work at its limit and none of the differences matter. The array reports healthy, performance is acceptable, and there is no signal of any kind that the members are heterogeneous. Years of uneventful service is the expected outcome, which is why the condition is never addressed.

A Rebuild Asks Every Drive at Once

Reconstruction is the one operation that reads every surviving member hard and continuously. A drive that is marginal under sustained load has had no opportunity to reveal that during ordinary use, and every opportunity during a rebuild — at the exact point the array has no remaining protection. That is how a single drive failure becomes two.

Specify the Members, Not the Capacity

Model, firmware level and sector format of the drives already present are what determine whether a replacement joins cleanly and behaves consistently under rebuild load. Sector format can prevent joining outright, which is discovered with the array already degraded. ICD asks for all three, because matching on capacity alone is a guess. Tested, serial-verified, one to three years.
