FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

HPE controller cache and workload questions for operators in Bahrain.

Yes. The GCC card we publish sets Manama at 3 to 4 days, door to door from Cairo.
Possibly to reads. Smart Array cache is divided between read-ahead and write-back, and that split is configurable. A controller weighted heavily toward reads leaves comparatively little for absorbing writes, so a write-heavy workload sees little benefit from cache the machine genuinely has.
It depends entirely on the workload, which is the point. A database doing mostly writes and a file server doing mostly sequential reads want opposite configurations. There is no universally correct answer, only an answer that matches what the machine does now.
Because it was set once, at commissioning, for the workload the machine was bought for. Machines change roles. The split does not change with them, and since it produces no fault and no alert there is nothing to prompt a review years later when the role is different.
Read the current split and the read-to-write ratio of the workload before deciding. Frequently the cache already present is adequate and merely divided the wrong way. We will say when that is the case. Bahrain runs the 3 to 4 day GCC lane; each part is bench-proven, tagged to its serial, and backed one to three years.

Cache Is Not One Pool

Smart Array controller cache is split between read-ahead and write-back, and that division is a configurable ratio rather than a fixed property. The total is what appears on the specification; the split is what determines whether a given workload benefits from it. A controller with a generous cache weighted heavily toward reads offers a write-heavy application very little.

There Is No Correct Setting, Only a Matching One

A transactional database writing constantly and a file server streaming sequential reads want opposite configurations, and both are legitimate. This is why the setting is exposed at all. It also means the value cannot be audited in isolation: you have to know what the machine does before you can say whether its cache is divided sensibly.

Set once, for a machine that no longer exists

The split is chosen at commissioning, for the role the server was bought to perform. Roles change. A machine bought for file storage acquires a database; a reporting server becomes a transactional one. The cache configuration does not follow, and because it produces no fault, no alert and no error, nothing ever prompts the question. Bahraini operators describing slow writes on a well-specified array are frequently describing this.

Check before spending

Read the current split and measure the read-to-write ratio of the actual workload. If the cache is already sufficient and simply apportioned the wrong way, the fix costs nothing and buying more would have changed very little. We would rather tell you that than sell a cache module that will not help.

What ICD Supplies for HPE Estates in Bahrain

Cache modules and the hardware that protects them, Smart Array controllers supplied with the cache their generation expects, ProLiant chassis components, array drives whose performance the cache configuration either helps or wastes, ECC memory filling a bank consistently, and hot-swap supplies for chassis no longer carried. The GCC card we publish sets Manama at 3 to 4 days, door to door from Cairo. Each controller and drive is verified as a set before dispatch, serial-logged, with one to three years of cover.
