Redundancy Is Quoted at a Temperature

When a server is described as having N+1 fan redundancy, that claim carries an unstated condition: at the rated inlet temperature. The surviving fans can absorb the loss of one because there is thermal margin to spend. Raise the inlet above the rating and that margin is already committed to the ambient heat, so the spare capacity the redundancy depended on is no longer there to be spent twice.

This makes the same machine behave differently across the year in Algerian facilities that run warm seasonally. Nothing in the configuration changes. The specification is not wrong and the hardware is not faulty. What changes is whether the assumption behind the redundancy still holds, and there is no indicator anywhere that says which side of it you are on today.

Shutdown rather than degradation

Because the margin was already gone, losing one fan does not produce a slow rise and a warning. It produces a rapid climb to the protective threshold and a controlled shutdown, sometimes within minutes. Operators reasonably report this as the machine over-reacting to a single fan, when in fact it reacted correctly to a condition that had been true for weeks.

Read inlet against the rating, then decide how to stock

The management controller reports inlet temperature; the platform documentation states the ambient class. If inlet sits at or above it, plan as though there is no fan redundancy: hold a spare on site rather than ordering when one fails, because the window between failure and shutdown will not accommodate a delivery.
