FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

HPE cooling margin and fan redundancy questions for operators in Algeria.

Two to four days door-to-door from Cairo, taken from the North Africa card on our published shipping page rather than estimated per order.
Fan redundancy is stated at a rated ambient temperature. An N+1 configuration means the remaining fans can carry the load at that temperature. Above it, the margin that made it N+1 is already being spent on the heat, so losing one fan takes the machine straight to insufficient rather than to degraded.
Every thermal specification is. The rating is not wrong; the room is outside the conditions it assumes. An Algerian facility running warm for part of the year has a server that is genuinely N+1 in winter and effectively N+0 in summer, with nothing in the configuration to show the difference.
Compare the inlet temperature the management controller reports against the ambient class the platform is rated for. If inlet is at or above the rated figure, treat fan redundancy as absent for planning purposes and hold a spare on site rather than ordering on failure.
Fan assemblies as stocked items, processor-matched heatsinks with fresh interface material, air baffles, and supplies whose own cooling forms part of the budget. Our published North Africa band covers Algeria in 2 to 4 days door-to-door from Cairo. Each item is run up on the bench, filed under its own serial, and backed one to three years.

Redundancy Is Quoted at a Temperature

When a server is described as having N+1 fan redundancy, that claim carries an unstated condition: at the rated inlet temperature. The surviving fans can absorb the loss of one because there is thermal margin to spend. Raise the inlet above the rating and that margin is already committed to the ambient heat, so the spare capacity the redundancy depended on is no longer there to be spent twice.

N+1 in Winter, N+0 in Summer

This makes the same machine behave differently across the year in Algerian facilities that run warm seasonally. Nothing in the configuration changes. The specification is not wrong and the hardware is not faulty. What changes is whether the assumption behind the redundancy still holds, and there is no indicator anywhere that says which side of it you are on today.

Shutdown rather than degradation

Because the margin was already gone, losing one fan does not produce a slow rise and a warning. It produces a rapid climb to the protective threshold and a controlled shutdown, sometimes within minutes. Operators reasonably report this as the machine over-reacting to a single fan, when in fact it reacted correctly to a condition that had been true for weeks.

Read inlet against the rating, then decide how to stock

The management controller reports inlet temperature; the platform documentation states the ambient class. If inlet sits at or above it, plan as though there is no fan redundancy: hold a spare on site rather than ordering when one fails, because the window between failure and shutdown will not accommodate a delivery.

What ICD Supplies for HPE Estates in Algeria

Fan assemblies held as stocked items so a replacement is already local, processor-matched heatsinks supplied with fresh thermal interface material, air baffles that keep the ducted path intact, ECC memory ordered so one bank comes from one supplier, and power supplies whose own cooling forms part of the chassis budget. The published North Africa band covers Algeria at 2 to 4 days door-to-door from Cairo. Each item is run up on the bench, filed under its own serial, and backed one to three years.
