Frequently Asked Questions
Dell expansion slot and riser questions for operators in Taiwan.
The Model Number Does Not Tell You the Slots
Taiwanese operators extending a Dell estate frequently order an expansion card against a model number and discover on the day that there is nowhere to put it. The reason is that expansion capability on a PowerEdge is set by the riser configuration selected when the machine was built, not by the model. Slot count, electrical width and card height all follow from the riser arrangement, and two servers carrying the same model number can present entirely different options.
A Slot That Exists and Is Not Connected
The more difficult version of this problem is a slot that is physically present and electrically dead. Expansion lanes originate at the processors, and on many chassis a whole riser is fed by the second socket. A machine bought in a single-processor configuration therefore has the mechanical provision for cards it cannot actually use. From the outside the slot looks available; a blanking plate and an unpopulated connected slot are indistinguishable without checking the build.
Why this is not visible in the paperwork
Asset inventories record the model, the serial and often the processor count, but rarely the riser arrangement. The information exists — the service tag resolves to the configuration as built — but it is not the information anybody copies into a spreadsheet. So the question of what can be added to a machine gets answered from the model name, which is the one identifier that does not contain the answer.
What to check before buying the card
Resolve the service tag to the as-built configuration, confirm the riser arrangement, and confirm both the electrical width and the physical height of the slot you intend to use. Where the slot you need does not exist, the riser is itself a component we supply, subject to the chassis generation and to whether the processor feeding it is populated.
What ICD Supplies for Dell Estates in Taiwan
Riser assemblies and cages by chassis generation, expansion cards matched to the slot width and height actually available, PERC controllers with their cache hardware, ECC memory by generation, and power supplies sized for the card and drive load once the machine is fully populated. We quote against the service tag rather than the model name. Each item is tested, recorded under its own serial and warranted one to three years.
