FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Cisco encryption throughput and platform sizing questions for operators in Taiwan.

Frequently the encryption. Router platforms have a bounded capacity for encrypted throughput, set by their hardware accelerator, and it is usually far below the aggregate of the interfaces. Once encrypted traffic approaches that bound the links slow while the circuit graphs still look comfortable.
Because the interfaces are healthy. The bottleneck sits between them, in the processing stage that encrypts and decrypts. Interface utilisation is measuring the wrong thing, and it is the metric everyone has a dashboard for, so the platform looks adequate right up to the point where it is not.
Latency rises, throughput plateaus below the circuit capacity, and the control-plane processor load climbs as work overflows onto it. The plateau is the useful signal: traffic stops increasing at a figure that is not a circuit boundary and does not correspond to anything in the interface configuration.
Rarely, and it is the expensive wrong answer. Upgrading circuits leaves the encryption capacity exactly where it was, so throughput does not change and the additional bandwidth is unused. The platform or the service module doing the encryption is what has to change.
By sizing on encrypted throughput rather than port count. We supply routing platforms, service modules that offload encryption, Catalyst switching, UCS components, matched optics and correctly sized supplies. Tell us the encrypted volume you carry and where it is going. Every module is proven under load before dispatch, serial-logged, and warranted one to three years.

The Bottleneck Is Between the Interfaces

A Cisco routing platform has a bounded capacity for encrypted throughput, determined by the hardware accelerator that performs the encryption. That figure is typically far below the combined capacity of the platform interfaces. Taiwanese operators running site-to-site encrypted links therefore reach a ceiling that is not visible in any interface statistic, because the constraint sits in a processing stage rather than on a port.

Every Dashboard Measures the Wrong Thing

Interface utilisation is the metric everyone graphs, and it stays healthy because the interfaces genuinely are healthy. Circuit capacity looks adequate. The links are not congested in the sense the monitoring understands. What is saturated is the accelerator, and unless someone is specifically watching it, the platform appears correctly sized right up to the point where traffic stops growing.

The signature is a plateau

Saturation presents as throughput that flattens at a figure corresponding to nothing in the configuration: not a circuit rate, not a shaping policy, not an interface speed. Latency rises, and control-plane processor load climbs as work that cannot be accelerated overflows onto it. That combination — a plateau at an arbitrary number plus rising processor load — is the thing to look for, and it is specific enough to be conclusive.

Why buying bandwidth does not help

The instinctive response to slow links is to order more circuit capacity, and here it changes nothing. The encryption capacity is unchanged, throughput remains at the same plateau, and the additional bandwidth is paid for and unused. The component that has to change is the platform performing the encryption, or a service module that takes that work off the main processor.

What ICD Supplies for Cisco Estates in Taiwan

Routing platforms sized on encrypted throughput rather than port count, service modules that offload encryption from the main processor, Catalyst access and distribution switching, UCS interconnects and server nodes, optics selected for the host platform and the distance involved, and power supplies sized for the module population installed. Tell us the encrypted volume you carry and the topology it crosses, and we will size against that. Every module is proven under load before dispatch, serial-logged, and warranted one to three years.
