FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Shared paths, grouped failures and the South Africa lane.

Five to eight days door-to-door from Cairo. South Africa is named on the Southern Africa card on our shipping page and Johannesburg is served on that lane. Clearance sits outside that figure and is quoted separately.
Look at what those drives have in common rather than at the drives. If they share a cable run or a section of backplane, an intermittent fault on that shared path will present as several disks misbehaving independently. Each drive tests perfectly on the bench, because each drive is perfect. The fault is in what connects them.
Because from the controller position a drive that stops responding is a drive that stopped responding. It has no way to distinguish a disk that failed from a disk it could not reach, so it reports what it observes. That report is accurate and it points at the wrong component.
That is the usual sequence, and it is what makes this expensive. Replacing a drive appears to help because the array rebuilds and the immediate symptom clears, so the diagnosis seems confirmed. The pattern only becomes visible when someone plots which bays are affected and notices they are contiguous or share a connector.
Whether the affected bays share a path, and whether the errors correlate in time. Both are readable from the controller logs. We supply the SAS runs, backplanes and expanders as well as drives, so a path fault can be fixed as a path fault.

Dell Support in South Africa After End of Life

Several drives in one machine dropping out and returning, each passing every test applied to it, is rarely several failing drives. It is usually one fault somewhere they have in common. The disks are being blamed because the disks are what the controller can name.

A Controller Reports Reachability, Not Health

When a drive stops answering, the controller records that it stopped answering. It cannot tell whether the device failed or whether the path to the device was momentarily broken, because both look identical from where it sits. That report is precise and true, and it names the endpoint rather than the connection, which sends every subsequent action to the wrong component.

Replacing a disk appears to work

Swap a dropped drive and the array rebuilds and the symptom disappears for a while. That looks like confirmation. In fact an intermittent path fault will go quiet on its own and return later, so any action taken shortly before the quiet period gets the credit. Estates commonly replace three or four disks across months before anyone questions the pattern.

The pattern is in the bay numbers

What gives it away is geography. Plot which bays have been affected and a path fault usually shows as a contiguous group, or as exactly the set of bays served by one cable or one section of backplane. That mapping is not something monitoring produces on its own, and on an out-of-support estate with no vendor engineer to suggest it, the question is rarely asked.

What ICD Supplies for Dell Estates in South Africa

SAS runs between controller and backplane, backplanes and expanders, drives in the carrier the backplane reads, PERC controllers with the cache their revision expects, PowerEdge chassis and boards, and registered memory in the documented sequence. South Africa is named on the published Southern Africa card at 5 to 8 days door-to-door from Cairo. Each part is driven under load before release, serial-filed, and covered one to three years.
