FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Out-of-band access, shared ports and the Ivory Coast lane.

Abidjan is five to seven days from Cairo, door to door. Ivory Coast is named on the West Africa card on our shipping page and the commercial capital is served on it, with clearance quoted separately from the transit band.
The management controllers were almost certainly sharing a production network port rather than using a dedicated one. In shared mode the controller rides on a port the operating system also uses, so a change to that port configuration, a VLAN reassignment or a teaming change can remove the management path entirely. The servers are unaffected, which is exactly why nobody noticed at the time.
Because it saves a switch port and a cable per server, and at build time it works perfectly. On a large estate that is a real saving, and the dependency it creates is invisible until somebody changes the production side for an unrelated reason. It is a reasonable decision whose cost is deferred.
The change itself is usually straightforward, and getting to the servers to make it is the problem once management is already gone. That is the trap: the work needed to restore remote access requires the access you no longer have, so it becomes a site visit rather than a configuration task.
Dedicated management hardware and network cards for PowerEdge generations no longer sold, so management can be given a path that does not move when production networking does. We will ask which mode an estate is in before shipping, because it changes what is worth buying.

Dell Support in Ivory Coast After End of Life

Losing remote management across a rack while every server keeps running is a strange kind of outage. Nothing is down. Every service is available. And the ability to inspect, reconfigure or recover any of those machines from a distance has gone, because the management controllers were reachable only through a port that production networking just changed underneath them.

Shared Management Rides on a Port It Does Not Control

A management controller can be given its own physical port, or it can share one with the operating system. Shared mode works well and saves a port and a cable per machine. It also means the management path inherits every decision made about that port: VLAN membership, teaming, link settings. Change any of those for production reasons and management can disappear without production noticing at all.

The change and the loss are attributed to different things

Whoever altered the production network sees production working and concludes the change was successful. Whoever discovers management is unreachable is usually someone else, later, doing something unrelated. The two events are separated by time and by team, so the connection between them is rarely made quickly.

Recovery needs the access that was lost

Restoring the management path means reaching the servers, and the usual way to reach them is the path that is gone. Where the estate is in another building or another city the fix becomes a journey rather than a task. On out-of-support hardware, where the management interface is also the tool for diagnosing everything else, that is a considerable exposure to carry.
