Look at the carrier. Fault indication is signalled from the enclosure to the tray, and a carrier from a different generation can fit mechanically and be electrically compatible for data while not supporting the signalling the shelf uses. The disk works, the controller reports its state correctly, and the one indicator an engineer standing at the rack relies on never changes.
It matters at the moment somebody walks to the rack to pull the failed disk. Every physical identification step depends on the indicator. Without it the engineer is matching bay numbers to a controller report, which is error-prone, and pulling the wrong disk from a degraded array is how a recoverable failure becomes a lost array.
Usually by transplanting a disk into a spare tray, or by buying a disk supplied in a tray from a neighbouring generation. It works, so it passes every check anyone makes at the time. The defect is in a function nobody exercises until a failure, which may be years later.
In the carrier the target enclosure generation expects, confirmed against the shelf rather than against the drive. We would rather ask which enclosure it is going into than ship a disk in a tray that turns a visible failure into an invisible one.

The controller says a disk has failed. The engineer walks to the rack and every indicator on the front looks the same as it did last week. Somewhere in that shelf is a failed member of a degraded array, and the machine has lost the only means it had of pointing at it.

Fault Indication Is Signalled Through the Carrier

The light on the front of a drive tray is not driven by the disk. The enclosure signals to the carrier, and the carrier drives the indicator. That signalling is generation-specific. A tray that fits the bay and passes data correctly can be unable to interpret what the shelf is telling it, so the disk operates perfectly and the indicator never responds to anything.

The gap is between the report and the rack

Management reports the failure accurately, so from a monitoring point of view nothing is wrong with the system. The break is in the last step, where a report has to become a hand on the correct disk. That step relies on the indicator, and the alternative — counting bays and trusting that the numbering in the report matches the numbering on the chassis — is exactly the kind of mapping that goes wrong under pressure.

Pulling the wrong disk is the real cost

On a degraded array there is no margin. Removing a healthy member to replace a failed one takes the array from degraded to failed in the time it takes to lift a latch. That is the outcome the indicator exists to prevent, and it is quietly unavailable on any bay holding a carrier the shelf cannot signal to.
