Capacity planning: 4Kn, rebuild windows and SED

At 14TB and above, the rebuild window becomes a real design constraint. A single 14TB 7.2K disk can take many hours to rebuild under load, and during that window the array runs degraded. The mitigation is twofold: standardise on 4Kn native-sector disks (more efficient large-block I/O than 512e emulation on these capacities) and design RAID groups with adequate redundancy — RAID 6 or distributed parity for wide LFF pools rather than RAID 5. Self-encrypting (SED) variants matter under Saudi data-residency and regulated-sector requirements; pair them with the UCS controller’s key management and keep encrypted and non-encrypted disks in separate volumes.
