Server Parts Naming Conventions: How to Read Dell, HPE, and Lenovo Part Numbers

Understanding part number formats helps you quickly identify what a component is and what it fits. Each brand uses a different convention.

Dell Part Numbers

  • 5-character alphanumeric (e.g., 0GYH9V, 3XWJ8) — Dell internal PNs
  • 3-digit dash format (e.g., 338-BSTD, 400-ATIN) — Dell option PNs (338=CPU, 400=Storage, 405=RAID)

HPE Part Numbers

  • 6-digit dash 3-digit (e.g., 815100-B21) — HPE option PNs. B21=option kit, 001=spare.
  • P-prefix (e.g., P28610-B21) — newer format, same structure

Lenovo Part Numbers

  • 2-character + 5-digit (e.g., 7X06CTO1WW) — Lenovo CTO PNs
  • 4-digit + suffix (e.g., 4X77A08632) — Lenovo option PNs (4X77=memory, 4X70=storage)
