ProLiant DL360 Gen9 to PowerEdge R650 Migration Guide: Cross-Brand Enterprise Move

Moving from ProLiant DL360 Gen9 (HPE Gen9) to PowerEdge R650 (Dell 15G) is a decision most infrastructure teams make once every 5-7 years. Get it wrong and you inherit a platform your staff cannot service. Get it right and you cut hardware spend 40-60% while keeping the workload humming.

DL360 Gen9 EOSL hit 2025-07-22. 1U high-density deployments face the same out-of-support compliance risk as 2U. Dell R650 refurb is an increasingly popular landing spot for cross-vendor 1U migrations because R650’s refurb inventory is deep and the capex delta vs new DL360 Gen11 is substantial.

Data migration: VMware, Hyper-V, bare-metal

vMotion, Live Migration, P2V — standard migration methods work. EVC mode for VMware set to lowest common denominator (Haswell baseline for Gen9 sources).

BIOS and firmware re-certification
