This protects data integrity but significantly reduces write performance — often by 50% or more. The server continues to operate but at degraded write performance until the battery is replaced.
BBU (Battery Backup Unit) uses rechargeable batteries to maintain RAID cache during power loss. FBWC (Flash-Backed Write Cache) uses a supercapacitor to power the transfer of cache data to onboard NAND flash. CacheVault is Broadcom's implementation of flash-backed cache. FBWC and CacheVault are preferred over BBU because they do not degrade over charge cycles and provide indefinite data retention.
Traditional RAID BBUs should be replaced every 2-3 years as battery capacity degrades with charge cycles. FBWC supercapacitors and CacheVault modules typically last 5+ years. Your server's BMC or RAID management utility will alert you when the battery health falls below acceptable levels. Proactive replacement prevents unexpected performance degradation.
A CMOS battery warning indicates the CR2032 coin cell on the server motherboard is low. This battery maintains BIOS settings, time/date, and BMC configuration when the server is unplugged. If it fails completely, the server will reset to default BIOS settings on every power cycle. CMOS batteries should be replaced promptly to avoid configuration loss.
