RAID, HBA and IT mode
Lenovo’s storage adapters cover three roles. ThinkSystem RAID 530/930/940 controllers provide hardware RAID with optional flash-backed cache for write-heavy arrays. HBAs (430/440 series) present drives directly in IT mode for software-defined and HCI stacks such as vSAN, where the host owns the parity. Emulex Fibre-Channel HBAs connect servers to external SAN fabric at 16G and 32G. ServeRAID and MegaRAID controllers cover the earlier System x and ThinkServer generations. Choose RAID cache size and queue depth to match drive count and workload, and verify PCIe generation (Gen3/Gen4) against the slot you intend to use.

Cache, queue depth and HCI readiness
Adapter choice shapes storage performance as much as the drives behind it. Hardware RAID controllers with flash-backed cache (the ThinkSystem RAID 930/940 family) accelerate write-heavy parity arrays, while the controller’s queue depth and PCIe generation cap throughput under load. For hyper-converged and software-defined stacks such as VMware vSAN, an HBA in IT mode is mandatory so the host — not the card — owns the parity. Emulex Fibre-Channel HBAs extend the server to external SAN at 16G or 32G. ICD aligns controller class, cache size and PCIe slot generation to the array design before quoting, so the adapter suits the workload rather than bottlenecking it.
