Heat, Generators and Why Lenovo RAID Batteries Fail Early in Nigeria
The failure that dominates Nigerian Lenovo estates is not a drive and not a board. It is the RAID cache battery, and the reason is environmental. Rooms running on generator and inverter supply cycle more, run warmer and hold higher ambient temperatures than the design assumption behind those batteries. They degrade in a fraction of the expected life, and when they do the controller drops to write-through mode.
The symptom nobody diagnoses
Write-through is not a fault. Nothing goes red. Transactions simply take longer, batch windows overrun, and a payments platform that used to close its day by two in the morning starts finishing at five. Teams chase the database and the network for weeks before anyone opens the storage controller report. The part costs very little; the diagnosis costs a great deal.
What we recommend holding
RAID 930 and 940 cache batteries at the top of the list, then redundant PSUs matched to the exact chassis, then fan modules, then drives in the correct tray. That order reflects what actually fails under Nigerian power conditions rather than a generic stocking list, and it matters because delivery to Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt runs five to seven days per our published shipping times, with customs clearance adding one to three.
Thermal management is a parts question too
Fan modules fail more often here, and a degraded fan raises the ambient temperature that kills the next battery. Treating fans as consumables rather than as faults breaks that cycle, and it is the cheapest intervention available on an ageing estate.
