Lenovo and the IBM System x Estates Still Running in Egypt
A large share of what Egyptian manufacturers, industrial groups and mid-market firms call their Lenovo estate is actually IBM System x hardware — x3550 and x3650 M4 and M5 — that transferred to Lenovo in 2014. Those machines are now well past every support milestone either vendor published, and they are still running production ERP and line-of-business systems in Cairo, 10th of Ramadan and Alexandria.
Why the support lineage confuses procurement
The label on the bezel says IBM. The service contract, if one ever existed, moved to Lenovo. The part numbers straddle both catalogues. We regularly meet Egyptian IT teams who have been told their hardware is unsupportable simply because nobody could work out whose catalogue to search. It is supportable; it just needs someone who knows both numbering schemes. ICD cross-references IBM FRU numbers to Lenovo part numbers and supplies against either.
ThinkSystem, the current generation
Newer Egyptian estates run SR630, SR650 and SR850, managed through XClarity Controller rather than IMM2. The failure profile is different from the System x era: fewer mechanical faults, more around RAID 930 and 940 cache batteries and NVMe carriers. We stock both generations because most estates here are mixed.
Local stock, and what that changes
Parts are held in Cairo. For a manufacturer running a plant on one ERP database, the difference between a two-to-four-day delivery and a multi-week import is the difference between a shift lost and a quarter disrupted. Common items — RAID controllers, PSUs, DDR4 RDIMM, SAS drives with the right tray — typically arrive in two to four days per our published shipping times.
