Mobility Requires a Target, Not Just a Feature

Moving a running partition to another machine is a genuine capability and it has preconditions: a target compatible in processor generation and firmware, shared access to the same storage, and enough free resource to hold what arrives. The feature is configured once; the preconditions have to remain true continuously.

Free Capacity Is the One That Quietly Disappears

Mobility is usually established when both machines are new and lightly loaded, and the headroom that makes it possible is consumed gradually as workloads grow on both sides. Years later the target is as busy as the source and could not receive it. Nothing announced that, because the capability was never exercised after the day it was set up.

Firmware Drift Is the Other

Two machines maintained separately over years can reach different firmware levels, and past end of support there may be no supported path to bring them back into alignment. That incompatibility is invisible until a move is attempted, which is to say invisible until the moment it is needed.

Two Afternoon Exercises

Attempt a move, and confirm the target has the resource to accept the largest partition you might need to evacuate. Both are cheap to do now and expensive to discover later.
