The P408i-a (Gen10 AROC) and P440ar (Gen9 modular) share the HPE Smart Storage Battery 96W (875241-B21) as the flash-backed write cache power source. The battery is a wear part: HPE rates it at roughly 3-5 years in a 25-35°C inlet environment, less in a hotter closet. The fault pattern is predictable — the iLO AHS log prints a “Smart Storage Battery failed” event, the cache mode drops from WriteBack to WriteThrough, and database write latency on the attached array doubles or triples overnight without an obvious chassis-level alert. Replacement is a hot-swap on Gen10, semi-hot on Gen9 (cable discipline matters). A P440ar in a 2018-deployed DL380 Gen9 that has never had the battery replaced is on borrowed time as of 2026.
